Algarve golf courses over one million rounds in 2011

Results for 2011 are very positive.

The Algarve's golf courses have exceeded one million rounds last year, a figure that shows an increase of 4.9 percent compared to 2010 and puts the Algarve at the top of the dream destinations for European golfers.

"Since 2008, the fields did not reach such a positive result, although the fluctuation of the pound and the international financial crisis have not helped to further growth. The mark of a million rounds attests, however, the region's performance in this strategic product, "says the president of the Algarve Tourism Association, António Pina.

The main country from where golfers come has remained the UK, followed by Germany, Scandinavia, Ireland and the Netherlands, which fueled the golf industry from filling the fields at a time when hotel occupancy rates tend to decline. Each month, the highest increases occurred in March, April and October, the peak-season golf.

The Algarve now has 40 fields (32 of 18 holes and 8 of 9 holes) designed by famous architects and honored with several international awards, including those awarded by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), the German magazine "Golf Magazin 'and the prestigious British magazine' Today's Golfer.
